Itinerary High River Season 4 Days

This four-day voyage aboard the Zafiro reveals the flooded rainforest landscapes of northern Peru during the high-water season. Starting in Iquitos, the journey follows the Ucayali, Marañón, and Amazon rivers, with explorations into quiet tributaries surrounding the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Guided skiff excursions provide opportunities to encounter extraordinary biodiversity, from pink river dolphins and vibrant bird species to monkeys and nocturnal wildlife. Visits with local Amazonian communities and engaging onboard experiences enrich the itinerary, creating a short yet deeply immersive introduction to one of the world’s most remarkable natural environments.

Day 1 (Wednesday) : Iquitos, Nauta, Pahuashiro

Upon arrival at the airport, guests begin a scenic transfer by road to Nauta, where the Zafiro awaits. Once onboard, the crew greets travelers and escorts them to their suites, each featuring large windows that frame the surrounding Amazon landscape.
Before the vessel sets sail, guests gather for a welcome cocktail prepared with fresh Amazonian fruits while taking in views from the observation deck or lounge. Naturalist guides then present an introduction to the expedition, explaining the river systems, ecosystems, and wildlife likely to be encountered along the route.
Later in the afternoon, the first skiff excursion explores the Yacapana area, a region of flooded forest and narrow waterways that supports a wide range of birdlife, reptiles, and mammals. As evening approaches, guests set out on a guided nocturnal safari. With the help of spotlights, guides search the riverbanks for caimans while identifying frogs, insects, and other creatures active after dark. The day concludes with a welcome dinner showcasing regional Peruvian and Amazonian cuisine.

Day 2 ( Thursday): Ucayali River, Yanallpa of Ucayali, Tapiche River, Dorado River

The morning begins early with a sunrise skiff excursion to the Yanallpa region along the Ucayali River within the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Early hours provide excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, and the flooded forest allows skiffs to glide among the trees for an intimate view of the Amazon ecosystem.
After breakfast onboard, exploration continues with another outing along the Tapiche River. Its calm channels are ideal for spotting wildlife while guides discuss the delicate ecological balance of the rainforest and ongoing conservation initiatives.
Back aboard the vessel, guests participate in a cooking demonstration where the chef introduces traditional Peruvian techniques and ingredients commonly used in Amazonian dishes. In the afternoon, a skiff excursion to the Dorado River offers insight into traditional fishing practices used by local communities. As night falls, another guided search for nocturnal wildlife reveals the rainforest’s lively nighttime inhabitants before returning to the ship for dinner and relaxation.

Day 3 (Friday): Ucayali River, Yarapa de Ucayali (Black Waters), Amazon River, Tahuayo River

Following breakfast, the day’s adventure begins with an excursion to the Yarapa River, a black-water tributary well known for sightings of pink and gray Amazon river dolphins.
Later, the Zafiro continues toward the dramatic confluence where the Ucayali and Marañón rivers meet. This remarkable point marks the official beginning of the Amazon River and is considered one of the voyage’s most memorable highlights.
In the afternoon, a skiff excursion along the Amazon River offers insight into daily life along the riverbanks. Guests visit a small riverside community where residents share aspects of their culture, traditions, and close relationship with the surrounding rainforest. Before returning to the ship, travelers may witness a spectacular Amazon sunset. The evening concludes with music, a farewell gathering with the crew, and a special dinner onboard.

Day 4 (Saturday): Disembark in Iquitos

The final morning begins with breakfast onboard as the Zafiro navigates toward the port for disembarkation. Along the way, guests visit the Manatee Rescue Center, a conservation facility dedicated to protecting one of the Amazon’s most vulnerable species.
At the center, biologists and volunteers care for rescued Amazonian manatees that have been orphaned or injured. Visitors learn about the rehabilitation process and the efforts involved in eventually returning these gentle animals to their natural habitat. The center also provides educational insights into other Amazon wildlife and the environmental challenges facing the region.
This visit offers a meaningful conclusion to the expedition, highlighting the importance of conservation and the protection of Amazon biodiversity. Afterward, guests are transferred to the airport to continue their onward journey, departing with lasting memories of the rivers and rainforests of the Peruvian Amazon.

1 night accommodation Hotel - City of Iquitos. (Only 8D/7N and 5D/4N programs). *The night at the DoubleTree hotel is an additional service to the nights included in the Zafiro 8D/7N and 5D/4N itineraries. It can be taken at the beginning or end of the trip and does not change or reduce the number of days of navigation on board.
Lunch is included before boarding at our DoubleTree by Hilton Iquitos hotel. (This service depends on the arrival time of the recommended flight, which might change), (Valid for the 8D/7N and 5D/4N programs), (The 4D/3N itinerary includes a box lunch).
All meals while on board Zafiro.
All excursions & equipment (including rubber boots & rain ponchos).
Transfer from/to the cruise on the recommended flights. In case the passengers stay in Iquitos city hotels – please inform the Guest Coordinator, to arrange pick-up prior to or after your cruise.
